Sobre la eloquencia vernácula (or, de vulgari eloquentia) is a latin essay written by Dante Alighieri, on analysis of vernacular languages, evolution of language, and the structure of literary genres. It is believed that Dante composed it after he went into exile, circa 1302-1305. The work is interrupted in the middle of the fourteenth chapter, although the author mentions a fourth book, in which he planned to deal with the comic genre and the "mediocre" style.
